Sára Fidesová – La Lumiere High School in La Porte, Indiana

  • 18 years old

  • Gymnázium Š. Moyzesa in Ružomberok, Slovakia

  • Native of Liptovská Lúžna, small village in northern Slovakia

  • One of the best karate competitors in Slovakia. Also teaches kids karate

  • Enjoys sports – also does gymnastics, swimming, skiing

  • Loves music - plays clarinet in an orchestra and occasionally also drums

  • Excellent English, learned English through American movies

  • 3.83 unweighted GPA; wants to be a teacher

  • Father is a train conductor, mother is a cook at an elementary school

Janka Plešková – Rockingham County High School, North Carolina

  • 17 years old

  • Sophomore at Gymnázium Mikuláša Kováča in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia Studies in a bilingual Spanish immersion section at her high school

  • Multi-talented and creative - very active in the community

  • Roma Education Fund (REF) scholarship recipient

  • Member of Divé Maky – organization supporting talented Roma children

  • Works with adopted Roma children – subject of a TV documentary

  • Loves writing - published author in a poetry series

  • Talented actress – plays in a professional theater Bábkové divadlo na rázcestí 

  • Father is a forklift driver in Czech Republic; mother is a tailor at a factory

Nina Semjanová – heading to a high school in Phoenix, Arizona

  • 17 years old

  • Gymnázium Pavla Horova in Michalovce, Slovakia

  • From Michalovce, small town in eastern Slovakia

  • 4.00 unweighted GPA

  • Excellent, hard-working student with a strong interest in computer science

  • Working on projects in virtual reality and robotics

  • Enjoys art and sports – drawing, dancing, hiking, skiing

  • Works part-time at family’s bed & breakfast

  • Father owns a bed & breakfast; mother co-owns a small logistics company

Viktória Kubisová – studying life sciences at HAN University of Applied Sciences in Nijmegen, Netherlands.

  • 19 years old

  • Native of Podolínec, small town in northeastern Slovakia

  • Gymnázium Terézie Vansovej High School in Stará Ľubovňa, Slovakia

  • Recipient of the 2019/20 GBE Foundation high school scholarship

  • Multi-talented, very active in the community

  • Loves reading and writing - wrote for student newspaper, writes poems

  • Likes sports, taught English to kindergarten students

  • Plays piano, ukulele

  • Interested in chemistry and biology – wants to become a doctor or a scientist

  • Youngest of 5 children. Parents are retired; brother is mentally handicapped
